2010 STAR SPIN-OFF COMPETITION

2010 S.T.A.R. - Spin Off Competition

The spin off competition is a wonderful opportunity to have your prized fleece transformed into a hand-spun sample; to learn about the attributes the spinner values for preparation and spinning and the final assessment of the resulting hand spun yarn.

All alpaca owners are invited to submit 2 ounces of prime fleece to be spun and evaluated by experienced and qualified hand spinners.

The evaluation of the fleece sample is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the impression, ease of preparation for spinning and ease of spinning for a total of 75 points. Within this section fineness & handle, uniformity of micron & length, brightness, absence of guard hair, cleanliness, absence of second cuts, lock structure, staple length, soundness & tip damage and matting & cotting will determine the number of points given. The second part allows for a total of 25 points and scores the softness and hand feel of the spun skein.

The color divisions are white, light, fawn, brown, black, grey and multi. The multi class is new this year and will consist of 2 colors of 25 grams each from the individual alpaca. These 7 color categories together with the age groups make up the classes. First, second and third place ribbons are awarded in each class determined by the number of points accumulated.

The winners will be displayed at the Kid ‘N Ewe and Lamas, Too show at Boerne, Texas in November and the results will be posted on the STAR website..

Reminder:

Send 2 ounce sample of clean, prime fleece.  Fleece should be picked clean, but may not be washed or scoured.  Show rules state that anything under 2 oz. or OVER 4 oz. will receive point deductions.

Per AOBA Show Rules, entries are to be submitted in a clear, UNMARKED, plain, gallon-size zipper type plastic bag.

A completed “AOBA Handcrafter’s Spin-off Entry Tag” should be inserted in the bag.

A copy of the ARI certificate (and permission to show form, if necessary) should be sent along with a color photo of the alpaca (3.5”x 5” or 4”x 6”) stapled to the bottom right corner of the certificate.  Please place the ARI (with photo attached) in a clear, plastic sheet protector.  This is for display at the show, so make sure it is a good picture to help promote your animal!
